If you’re heading out early this Memorial Day morning, keep the umbrella handy — but not for long. Light drizzle and dense fog are draped across the region right now, with readings in the mid-to-upper 50s from Bath to Watkins Glen. The culprit is a weak low-pressure system sliding east across western New York, pulling a broad swath of moisture through the region. The good news: it’s leaving.
Showers will taper off from west to east through mid-morning, likely wrapping up across most of the Finger Lakes by 9 to 11 AM. Patchy fog and low clouds may linger into late morning — visibility could be briefly limited in the deeper valleys, so drive with care if you’re heading to a morning parade or ceremony. No NWS alerts are in effect.
By early afternoon, skies will brighten noticeably as high pressure builds in from the west. Expect a genuinely nice holiday afternoon, with highs reaching the low 70s in the valleys — Watkins Glen, Corning, and Penn Yan should touch 71° to 72° — and upper 60s near Canandaigua and higher terrain. Light winds will keep conditions comfortable. Evenings will be pleasant, with temps easing back into the upper 50s overnight.
Looking ahead: Tuesday and Wednesday bring a significant warmup, with highs potentially climbing well into the 70s. A few widely scattered showers or storms are possible both days, but widespread severe weather isn’t expected. Thursday through the weekend looks mainly dry and seasonable — a solid stretch heading into early June.
