A Frost Advisory remains in effect until 8 AM this morning for several counties across the region, including Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, and Tompkins. If you’ve got tomatoes or other tender plants out, get them covered now — temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s under clear skies are right at the threshold for frost damage. The advisory expires at 8 AM, and from there, the day takes a sharp turn for the better.
The cool, dry high pressure system that’s been parked over the region since midweek will slide east through the morning, allowing a light return flow to develop. That setup, combined with downslope warming, pushes afternoon highs into the upper 60s to low 70s — near 68° in Canandaigua and Penn Yan, around 70° in Corning and Bath, and up to 72° near Watkins Glen. Winds stay light all day, and skies will be mostly sunny through midday before mid- and high-level clouds begin filtering in from the south during the afternoon and evening as the next storm system approaches.
Enjoy the pleasant afternoon while it lasts. Rain moves in late tonight, and Saturday brings a widespread, soaking rain that will last through Saturday night — temperatures dropping back below normal with highs only in the 50s. Stream flows are running at seasonal levels across the region, so some minor rises are possible by Sunday morning after the rain. Looking further ahead, the pattern looks to dry out for early next week with gradual warming.
