The Finger Lakes Daily News reports on a freeze warning gripping the region before rain returns on Wednesday.

A Freeze Warning is in effect until 9 AM for Steuben and Schuyler counties, while a Frost Advisory covers Yates, Seneca, and much of the surrounding region through the same hour. If you haven’t already covered tender plants or moved them inside, do it now. Thermometers across the region are sitting in the low-to-mid 30s at daybreak — 33° in Corning and Bath, 34° in Canandaigua, 35° in Watkins Glen and Penn Yan — under clear skies and near-calm winds. A surface ridge cresting over the eastern Great Lakes is the culprit, allowing overnight radiational cooling to push temperatures right to the freeze threshold.

The good news: this morning’s chill gives way to a genuinely nice afternoon. Skies clear out, winds stay light, and highs climb to the lower 60s — near 64° in Watkins Glen, 63° in Corning, 61° in Canandaigua. Enjoy it, because the window closes fast.

Rain moves in tonight as a sharp mid-level trough digs into the Great Lakes and an associated surface low tracks east. Wednesday brings periods of rain with a few thunderstorms possible Wednesday afternoon and evening. That low will be slow to move, keeping unsettled conditions through Thursday before a gradual drying trend takes hold Thursday night into Friday.

Stream flows are running at normal to slightly elevated late-spring levels — nothing concerning at this time, though the rain Wednesday and Thursday bears watching.
