A Florida man was killed after walking onto I-90 in Erie County on Monday, according to State Police.

Troopers report responding to the westbound lane of I-90 in the Town of Hamburg at 4:48a for the report of a pedestrian struck by a tractor-trailer.

Upon investigation, troopers determined that 60-year-old Darryl Jones of Yalaha, Florida, walked from a nearby hotel onto the road where he was struck in the driving lane by a 2023 Kenwood. Police add that the operator of the tractor-trailer thought he may have struck a deer and continued traveling on I-90. Upon reviewing his dashcam footage, he realized it was a pedestrian.

Law enforcement was contacted at that point, and Jones was found dead in a nearby ditch. The body was taken by the Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office for a post-mortem investigation.

Troopers say no signs of foul play were found, and the scene was consistent with an accidental death.
