A Livingston County resident is undergoing rabies treatment after being potentially exposed to a rabid raccoon in the Town of Springwater.
Livingston County Public Health Director Jennifer Rodriguez says a state laboratory confirmed Tuesday that the raccoon tested positive for rabies.
Health officials say rabies is a deadly virus that attacks the central nervous system and is most commonly found locally in raccoons, skunks, and bats. They remind residents to avoid contact with wild or unfamiliar animals and to seek immediate medical attention if bitten or scratched.
Officials also stress the importance of keeping pets vaccinated. State law requires dogs, cats, and ferrets to be vaccinated against rabies beginning at four months of age.
Anyone who believes they may have been exposed to rabies is urged to contact the Livingston County Department of Health.
