Steuben County Man Charged With Animal Maltreatment

Police Blotter

A Hornby man faces multiple charges after an investigation into three malnourished dogs at his residence, according to Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard.

On May 22, Steuben County Sheriff’s deputies arrested James Byrnside, 69, following an initial report of a loose dog that appeared to be malnourished.  Three dogs were subsequently removed from the property by the Hornby Dog Control Officer and the New York State Police so they could receive emergency care at an animal treatment center. A subsequent investigation by Sheriff’s Office investigators allegedly revealed that Byrnside failed to provide proper care or sustenance for the three animals.

Byrnside was charged with three counts of torturing or injuring an animal. He was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to answer the charges in Hornby Town Court at a later date.

The charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Police reports are automatically removed from this site after 90 days.
