Two Corning residents were arrested Saturday after New York State Police say a traffic stop in the Town of Bath led to the discovery of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
According to State Police in Bath, a trooper stopped a 2003 Suzuki around 2:51 p.m. on County Route 11 near Interstate 86 after observing the vehicle operating with an expired inspection sticker.
During the investigation, troopers said the driver and passenger gave conflicting statements about their destination. Police said the driver, 47-year-old Richard Eygabroat of Corning, consented to a search of the vehicle.
Investigators say troopers located approximately nine grams of suspected methamphetamine, along with packaging materials and digital scales containing residue consistent with methamphetamine.
Eygabroat was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class B felony; second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia, a class A misdemeanor; and operating a motor vehicle without an inspection certificate, a violation.
The passenger, 50-year-old Julie Sweeney of Corning, was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia.
Both were transported to the Steuben County Jail for centralized arraignment processing.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
