Macedon Nurse Michelle Shirtz Named Thompson Hospital’s Nurse of the Year

Michelle Shirtz, an RN from Macedon, was named F.F. Thompson Hospital’s Nurse of the Year during UR Medicine Thompson Health’s National Nurses Week celebration on May 7. Shirtz, who works in the hospital’s intensive care unit, also received a Nurse of Distinction honor.

Heather Fosco, an LPN from Canandaigua, received the Overall Nurse of Distinction award at the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center, where she works on the Meadows Avenue unit.

Several other Thompson Health employees were recognized for excellence in nursing, patient care, mentoring, leadership, and service. Hospital Nurses of Distinction included April Hall, RN, of Lima; Rachel Morgan, MSN, RN, of Bloomfield; Jackie Monk, BSN, RN, of Bloomfield; and Jillian Pitkin, BSN, RN, of Penn Yan. Krista VanDusen, RN, of Geneva, received the Hospital Nurse of Distinction award in the Preceptor/Mentor category, while Kaitlyn Higby, RN, of Penn Yan, was recognized as the Hospital Nurse of Distinction Rising Star.

Trevor Harris of Marcellus was named Hospital Patient Care Partner of Distinction, and Kelli Wilder-Outlaw, ACNPC-AG, of Bloomfield, received the Hospital Advance Practice Provider of Distinction award. Dr. Katie Smith of Victor was honored as Doctor of Distinction, and Thompson Health’s Spiritual Care department was recognized as Hospital Department of Distinction.

Long-term care staff at M.M. Ewing were also honored during the ceremony. Tammy Crooke of Waterloo was named Long-Term Care Certified Nursing Assistant of the Year. Additional nursing and CNA awards recognized staff members from Canandaigua, Bloomfield, Newark, Victor, Avon, Dansville, Himrod, and other Finger Lakes communities.

Thompson Health officials said the annual recognition ceremony highlights employees who demonstrate exceptional patient care, leadership, teamwork, and commitment to the organization’s mission.
