The Finger Lakes Daily News reports a sunny and mild start to June, with temperatures for various cities before weekend storms are expected.

June is off to a fine start. Skies are clear across the region this morning, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 40s from Auburn to Canandaigua and a touch warmer near Watkins Glen and Penn Yan. No alerts are in effect, and there’s nothing complicated about today’s setup.

Expect a comfortable warming trend through the morning hours as light northerly winds gradually ease. Afternoons highs will reach the upper 60s across most of the region — near 65° in Canandaigua, around 67° in Auburn, and pushing close to 69° near Watkins Glen. It’s the kind of early-June afternoon that makes a good case for eating lunch outside.

Evenings cool quickly under clear skies. Temperatures will drop back into the low-to-mid 50s by 9 PM and settle near overnight lows in the mid-to-upper 40s by early Tuesday morning. A light jacket will earn its keep after sunset.

The bigger picture: forecasters at the NWS Buffalo office describe an omega blocking pattern locked in over the region this week, which essentially parks high pressure overhead and keeps storm systems at bay. That means continued sunny and warming conditions Tuesday through Thursday, with highs likely climbing into the low-to-mid 70s by midweek. The pattern breaks down late in the week as a system pressing in from the Pacific brings increasing instability. Friday carries a slight storm chance, with the better odds for showers and thunderstorms arriving Saturday and Sunday. Any stronger storms this weekend could produce downpours, so keep an eye on the forecast as the week progresses.
