Dense Fog Possible This Morning Before Weekend Heat Arrives

Finger Lakes Daily News weather report for May 17, 2026, titled 'Dense Fog Possible This Morning Before Weekend Heat Arrives'.
A weather report from Finger Lakes Daily News on May 17, 2026, warns of dense fog before a weekend heatwave.

A foggy start to the morning is possible across the Finger Lakes region — so if you’re heading out early, give yourself extra time. The National Weather Service in Buffalo flagged dense fog as a concern this morning, particularly over higher terrain where low clouds may settle into the hilltops, and in areas east of the lakes where lingering moisture near the surface has had nowhere to go. The culprit is a stubborn low-level inversion that’s trapping humidity close to the ground after recent showers pushed through. Expect conditions to improve by mid-morning as temperatures climb.

Once the fog clears, Sunday shapes up beautifully. Skies will turn mostly sunny through the afternoon, with highs pushing into the mid-to-upper 80s — near 87° in both Ithaca and Watkins Glen, 86° in Corning, and lower 80s in Auburn and Canandaigua. For mid-May, that’s genuinely impressive. Winds stay light out of the east and southeast, keeping things comfortable through early afternoon before humidity creeps back in. Evening temps fall into the upper 60s, with overnight lows settling near 58°.

The heat isn’t going anywhere quickly. Monday and Tuesday bring more summer-like warmth, though both afternoons carry a chance for showers and thunderstorms, especially inland. Tuesday looks like the more active day. A strong cold front arrives midweek, sweeping in showers and storms before clearing things out. The back half of the week turns much cooler and mainly dry — a sharp contrast to what we’re in store for the next few days.
