If you’re stepping out the door this morning, dress for a cool one. Temperatures across the Finger Lakes are sitting in the mid-to-upper 40s under a thick overcast sky — and that gray lid isn’t going anywhere today. The culprit is a surface high pressure system parked over the Upper Great Lakes, pumping a cool, dry airmass across the region. It’s keeping us dry, but it’s also keeping us chilly.
Highs this afternoon will top out well below seasonal norms: expect around 59° in Canandaigua, near 61° in Penn Yan, and closer to 65° down in the southern valleys around Watkins Glen and Corning. Winds stay light out of the northwest, so at least there’s no bite to it. Tonight turns cooler still as the high slides east and skies partially clear, dropping lows back into the mid-to-upper 40s locally.
The active NWS Beach Hazards Statement for northern Cayuga and Oswego Counties — primarily affecting Lake Ontario shorelines — expires at 11 AM this morning.
Friday looks slightly more comfortable, with temperatures nudging back toward seasonal norms ahead of the next system. Enjoy the dry stretch while it lasts, because Friday night into Saturday night brings the region’s most significant rain event in weeks. The NWS is signaling widespread soaking rainfall, with amounts across Western New York already being revised upward. Plan accordingly if you have weekend outdoor plans.
Stream flows are running at routine late-spring levels — nothing unusual to flag at this time.
