A boil water order has been issued for parts of Waterloo, advising residents to boil water before use.

Residents in portions of the Village of Waterloo are being advised to boil their water after a water main break caused a loss of pressure in the municipal water system on Tuesday.

The advisory affects properties located at 4 through 56 West Elizabeth Street and 17 through 38 Center Street.

Village officials said the loss of pressure occurred at approximately 11:50 a.m. due to a water main break. When water pressure drops, there is an increased risk that untreated water and potentially harmful microorganisms can enter the distribution system.

As a precaution, residents in the affected area are being instructed to boil tap water before using it for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, or preparing food. Water should be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute and then allowed to cool before use. Bottled water may also be used.

Officials noted that harmful microbes can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, and other gastrointestinal issues. Infants, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems may be at greater risk of illness.

Crews are repairing the damaged water line, and officials estimate the boil water advisory could remain in effect for up to three days while repairs are completed and water quality testing is conducted.

Residents will be notified when testing confirms the water is safe to use without boiling.

For additional information, residents can contact the Village of Waterloo at 315-539-9131 or the Seneca County Health Department at 315-539-1945.
