The Tompkins County Legislature has officially proclaimed May 25, 2026 as Memorial Day and is encouraging residents to participate in local ceremonies or pause at 11 a.m. Monday to honor those who died while serving in the United States military.

The proclamation recognizes the sacrifices made by fallen service members and Gold Star families, including 12 Tompkins County residents killed during the Vietnam War and five county residents lost in military conflicts since 2000.

County lawmakers presented the proclamation to Tompkins County Veterans Services Director J.R. Clairborne.

Officials said the observance serves as a reminder of the courage, service, and sacrifice of members of the Armed Forces and encourages residents to carry forward that legacy.
