The criminal case against Seneca Falls Town Supervisor Frank Schmitter has been transferred to a neighboring court, and a special prosecutor has been appointed to handle the matter.
The Finger Lakes Times reports Schmitter is scheduled to make his first appearance in Tyre Town Court at 4 p.m. May 27 after the case was transferred from Seneca County.
The 7th Judicial District Administrative Office in Rochester has appointed Wayne County District Attorney Christine Callanan as special prosecutor in the case.
Schmitter was charged May 1 by the Seneca Falls Police Department with third-degree criminal mischief, a Class E felony; official misconduct, a Class A misdemeanor; and second-degree harassment, a violation. The charges stem from an alleged confrontation that occurred the day before inside the Seneca Falls Municipal Building on Ovid Street involving a Town Board member.
According to a police report obtained by the Finger Lakes Times through a Freedom of Information Act request, Schmitter allegedly damaged an interior wall and made physical contact with Wendy Crane during the incident. Several town employees were reportedly interviewed as part of the investigation.
Schmitter, who was elected to a four-year term as town supervisor in 2023, entered a mandatory not guilty plea during his arraignment in Seneca County CAP Court and was released on an appearance ticket.
