Firefighters from the Geneva Fire Department participate in a Mercy Flight safety training session, learning about air ambulance operations and emergency procedures.

The Geneva Fire Department recently hosted a specialized training session focused on helicopter landing zone safety and emergencies involving small aircraft.

Firefighters from several surrounding departments, including the Oaks Corners and Seneca Falls Fire Departments, took part in the training alongside other local emergency responders.

According to participating departments, the session began with classroom instruction led by Mercy Flight Central covering helicopter landing zone operations and emergency situations involving aircraft. Firefighters were then given a hands-on overview of the helicopter, including patient loading procedures and safety protocols.

The training concluded with live fire exercises and rescue scenarios involving an aircraft prop.

Officials said the training provided a rare opportunity for area firefighters to gain experience handling incidents involving medical helicopters and small aircraft emergencies.

The Geneva Fire Department thanked all of the departments that participated, saying continued training helps improve safety throughout the community.  The Department added a very special thank you to Firefighter Nicholas Raplee and Mercy Flight for making Saturday’s training possible.
