The Finger Lakes Daily News reports on a fading frost advisory, with a chilly day and hard freeze expected ahead for the region.

A Frost Advisory remains in effect for Steuben, Schuyler, and Chemung counties until 8 AM this morning — so if you haven’t covered tender plants yet, now’s the time. Temperatures across the region are sitting in the upper 30s right now under clear skies, with Bath and Corning dipping to 36–37°F. The advisory expires before your morning commute wraps up, but don’t let the sunshine fool you into thinking the cold is done.

Today will be cooler than it looks. A weak shortwave system crossing the eastern Great Lakes this morning will bring increasing clouds through midday, and a few spotty showers are possible this afternoon — nothing heavy, but enough to keep an umbrella handy. Highs will only reach the mid-50s in most valley locations, with Watkins Glen topping out near 56° and Canandaigua and Penn Yan closer to 53°.

Tonight is the bigger concern. NWS Buffalo is flagging widespread frost and outright freeze conditions across the Southern Tier overnight — temperatures dropping back into the mid-to-upper 30s region-wide, with colder pockets likely pushing below 32°F in the lower valleys around Bath and Corning. Gardeners should plan accordingly before sunset.

Looking ahead, unsettled weather moves in Tuesday night and persists through Thursday, with periods of rain expected. A drier pattern may return by the weekend. Stream flows on the Seneca River near Seneca Falls remain elevated at 2,470 cfs, worth watching as more rain approaches midweek.
