Four members of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office have been recognized for their actions in helping save the life of a detainee who suffered an apparent overdose at the Steuben County Jail.

Sheriff Jim Allard presented formal commendations to Corrections Sergeant Brandon Erskine, Corrections Officer Brian Flynn, Corrections Officer Jennifer Smith, and Deputy Ryan Phelps during Monday’s meeting of the Steuben County Legislature’s Public Safety and Corrections Committee.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on March 20 while a CAP detainee was undergoing the intake body scan process at the jail. During the intake procedure, the detainee became unresponsive.

Officials said the officers and deputy quickly recognized the signs of an active overdose and immediately began emergency medical care. The team administered Narcan and provided supplemental oxygen while awaiting the arrival of emergency medical personnel.

The Sheriff’s Office said the detainee made a full recovery as a result of the responders’ quick assessment, teamwork, and training.

During the recognition ceremony, Sheriff Allard commended Erskine, Flynn, Smith, and Phelps for their leadership, professionalism, and life-saving actions.
