Two closed waste disposal areas at the Ontario County Landfill will be capped this year as the facility moves toward its planned closure by the end of 2028.
The project was outlined during this week’s meeting of the Ontario County Board of Supervisors’ Planning and Environmental Quality Committee.
Jeff Green of Casella Waste Services, which operates the landfill through Casella Waste Services of Ontario LLC, said the two capped areas are located at the south end of the landfill property near Rilands Road in the Town of Seneca.
According to Green, both sections have reached capacity and will undergo final closure work this year.
The process includes installation of a new liner system followed by layers of dirt, topsoil, and grass seed. The capped areas will also receive final grading as part of the closure work.
Green told county officials that methane collection wells will also be finalized in the capped sections to capture gas generated by buried waste.
The Ontario County Landfill is scheduled to close permanently no later than the end of 2028.
