A family escaped a fast-moving fire Wednesday afternoon that destroyed their home on Dewey Road in the Town of Manchester.

Emergency crews were called to 3777 Dewey Road shortly before 4:45 p.m. after reports of a residential structure fire. Firefighters from more than a dozen departments responded and worked to bring the blaze under control.

According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, the fire was contained to the residence and later extinguished, but the home was declared a total loss. Officials said the fire spread quickly, ultimately burning much of the structure to the ground.

All occupants of the home were able to get out safely, and no injuries were reported.

The American Red Cross responded to assist the displaced family. Town of Manchester code enforcement officials also responded, while RG&E crews shut off utility service to the property.

Dewey Road, between County Road 7 and North Avenue, remains closed as of 8:00 p.m. Wednesday as fire crews continue working at the scene.

Responding agencies included the Hopewell, Manchester, Shortsville, Clifton Springs, Pumpkin Hook, Seneca Castle, Oaks Corners, Phelps, Port Gibson, Northside, Victor, Fairville and Marion fire departments, along with Ontario County fire investigators, Mercy Flight EMS and the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Ontario County Fire Coordinators Office.
