A boil water order has been issued for parts of Moravia, requiring residents to boil water before consumption.

The Cayuga County Health Department has issued a boil water order for several areas in and around Moravia after a water system pressure loss caused by a power outage.

Affected residents include those living at:

  • 4947 through 5041 Skinner Hill Road
  • 1888 through 2032 State Route 38A
  • 5073 through 5127 Dresserville Road
  • 5104 through 5129 Breeds Road

Health officials are advising residents to bring tap water to a rolling boil for at least one minute and allow it to cool before use. Bottled water approved by the New York State Department of Health may also be used.

Officials say boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and food preparation until the order is lifted.

According to the Health Department, the issue began on Wednesday when a water line lost pressure during a power outage. Officials say pressure loss can create conditions where untreated water and harmful microbes may enter the water system.

Potential symptoms linked to contaminated drinking water can include diarrhea, cramps, nausea, and headaches. Health officials noted that infants, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems may face greater health risks.

Power has since been restored, and the Village of Moravia is collecting water samples to ensure the system is free from contamination. Officials anticipate the boil water order will remain in place for the next several days.

Residents will be notified when the advisory is lifted.
