The Cayuga County Water and Sewer Authority will host a public informational meeting next week to discuss a proposed sewer project aimed at helping protect Cayuga Lake water quality.
The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Southern Cayuga School cafeteria on Route 34B in Aurora. Residents are invited to attend and ask questions about the proposed Cayuga Lake Protection Plan.
Officials say the session will include a presentation, question-and-answer period, informational displays, and opportunities for residents to speak directly with project experts.
The proposal calls for the creation of a new Cayuga County sewer district that would install a low-pressure sewer system along roughly nine miles of Cayuga Lake shoreline in the towns of Ledyard and Genoa.
Under the plan, wastewater from homes within the district would be transported to the Village of Aurora’s wastewater treatment plant for treatment.
The authority says the project is designed to help reduce potential pollutant loads entering Cayuga Lake from shoreline residences, as concerns continue to grow over harmful algal blooms and declining water quality in the Finger Lakes.
Officials say the system would help protect Cayuga Lake as a source of drinking water and recreational activities, including swimming, fishing, and boating.
Residents within the proposed sewer district are scheduled to vote on the proposal during a referendum set for June 23.
Additional information about the project is available on the Cayuga County Water and Sewer Authority website.
