The Humane Society of Schuyler County has signed new sheltering agreements with the towns of Ovid and Covert for stray dogs found running at large.
Under the agreements, stray dogs picked up in the two towns will be transported to the Humane Society for shelter and care, where they will be held for five days while efforts are made to locate their owners. The Humane Society said it will work alongside Dog Control Officer April Moore to reunite animals with their families whenever possible.
Any dogs not claimed after the five-day holding period will become the property of the Humane Society and may be placed for adoption. The agreements remain in effect through Dec. 31, 2026.
Officials noted that under New York State law, all animals leaving the shelter must have a current rabies vaccination and a valid license. If owners cannot provide documentation, the Humane Society will arrange for vaccination at the owner’s expense and complete the licensing process.
Residents in Ovid and Covert who need assistance with stray dogs are asked to contact Dog Control Officer April Moore.
The Humane Society also provided updated contact information for other area communities. Residents in the Town of Lodi should contact Dog Control Officer Ben Caulkins regarding stray dogs, while Town of Barton residents can contact their local dog control officer or the Humane Society directly. In the Town of VanEtten, residents should continue contacting Dog Control Officer Dustin Rose or the Humane Society for assistance.
