Thousands of volunteers from across the Finger Lakes and Greater Rochester region will take part Thursday in the annual Day of Caring event organized by the United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes.
The event is considered the region’s largest single-day volunteer effort. Organizers say more than 6,000 volunteers representing 185 companies will complete 415 community service projects benefiting 175 nonprofit agencies across Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Wayne, and Wyoming counties.
Kickoff events are scheduled from 7:30 to 9 a.m., with volunteer projects taking place throughout the day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Several projects are planned in the Finger Lakes region, including multiple volunteer efforts in Ontario and Wayne counties.
In Ontario County, volunteers will work at 4-H Camp Bristol Hills in Canandaigua from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participating teams include Gallo, Wayne Cooperative Insurance Company, CNB, LNB, Leadership Ontario, and Cornell.
Another Ontario County project will take place at UR Thompson Health on Parrish Street in Canandaigua, where volunteers from Wegmans will assist from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In Wayne County, volunteers will work at the Sodus Bay Lighthouse Museum in Sodus Point from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Teams from L3Harris, Paychex, and Wegmans are expected to participate.
Another project is planned at the Lyons Community Center, where teams from LNB and Creation Technologies will volunteer from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
United Way officials say Day of Caring is designed to connect businesses, volunteers, and nonprofit organizations while helping complete projects that support communities throughout the region.
