A former substitute teacher and volunteer coach in the Canandaigua City School District has pleaded guilty to two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Michael Thompson, 27, of Canandaigua, entered a guilty plea in Ontario County Court and is expected to be sentenced on June 5 to one year of interim probation supervision.
Thompson was arrested in December following an investigation by the Canandaigua Police Department. Authorities alleged that Thompson communicated with two juvenile students through Snapchat between November and December, sending inappropriate messages and photographs.
Following Thompson’s arrest, the Canandaigua City School District confirmed he had worked a limited number of days as a substitute teacher during the 2024-2025 school year.
District officials also stated that Thompson briefly served as a volunteer coach for winter indoor track and modified boys’ lacrosse, attending no more than two practices for each sport.
The Ontario County District Attorney’s Office said its Victim Advocate’s Office contacted the victims’ families regarding the guilty plea before the matter was publicly released.
District Attorney Jason MacBride said the case was taken seriously due to the nature of the allegations involving minors.
“Our office takes cases involving inappropriate communications with minors extremely seriously,” MacBride said in a statement. “This resolution reflects the charges supported by the evidence and ensures continued court supervision of the defendant.”
MacBride also thanked the Canandaigua Police Department and victim advocates for their work on the case.
