With only one candidate on the ballot, the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is expecting a smooth transition in January.

Speaking on FLX Morning, Sheriff Brian Schenck said that he’s been working closely with Lieutenant Rob Franklin to help him understand the sheriff’s role in the community and set his agenda for the sheriff’s office. Schenck added that, when he retires on January 1, 2027, he wants Franklin to feel his new role is “just another day at the office.”

While the election for sheriff is not until November, Cayuga County voters are expected to see only Franklin’s name on the ballot. Former Auburn Police Officer Chris Major had challenged Franklin for the Republican Party’s nomination; however, he dropped out of the race in February. The Democratic Party did not nominate a candidate.

After nearly 30 years with the sheriff’s office, Schenck announced in November 2025 that he would not seek reelection, opening the door for a new candidate to succeed him.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3.
