The Auburn YMCA is planning major upgrades to its summer camp.
Speaking on FLX Morning, YMCA CEO Scott Sincerbeaux said the nonprofit has launched a capital campaign to raise $400,000 to improve and expand Camp Y-Owasco. He added that the Y has currently secured $100,000 in funding, thanks to commitments from the French and Metcalf foundations.
Sincerbeaux said the first project the Y will undertake at the camp is the renovation of the camp’s kitchen, which hasn’t been updated since the 1970s.
Additional improvements the YMCA hopes to make include the creation of a 1,000 ft sq pavilion, new bunks and mattresses for 13 cabins, a new playground, buying new equipment for the waterfront (eg kayaks, canoes, fishing equipment), and archery equipment. Sincerbeaux also said the Y hopes to create a “cabin of the future,” a prototype cabin designed to help extend the camp’s use beyond the traditional summer camp model to the wider community.
Camp Y-Owasco sits on 2,800 ft of Owasco Lake shoreline. Sincerbeaux said that, last year, the camp served 768 youth over eight weeks and served 3,600 meals.
The YMCA will hold registration days for this year’s camp at its William St location on tMay 13 and 16.
