Auburn Schools Prepare for Budget Vote, School Board Elections

Preparations are underway for the Auburn Enlarged City School District’s budget vote and school board elections.

The proposed 2026-27 budget is $111,979,888, a 4.34% increase over last year’s budget. This includes a tax levy increase of 2.43%.

In the district’s May newsletter, Superintendent of Schools Dr Misty Slavic said that “over the past year, we have made a number of difficult but necessary decisions to reduce costs,” including eliminating 6.5 support staff positions, three teaching positions, and three administrative positions.

Additionally, Slavic said the district faces “significant cost increases that are largely out of our control.” These include 20% increases for utilities, 16% for transportation costs, and increases for materials and contractual services.

Along with the budget vote, voters will also decide on a second proposition to create a 2026 Capital Reserve Fund.

A public hearing on the budget is planned for May 12 at 7:00p at the Auburn High School Library.

There are also three seats up for grabs on the school board this year. Dan Lovell, CJ Calarco, and Dr Eli Hernandez are all seeking reelection, while Bruce McBain is hoping to be elected for his first term on the board.

A candidates’ forum will be recorded on Thursday at Cayuga Community College. It will air at 7:00p on Auburn Regional Media Access, and will be available on the college’s media department’s YouTube channel.

The budget vote and school board elections will be held on Tuesday, May 19. More information on the budget, candidates, and polling places can be found on the district’s website.
