The Auburn Fire Department recently recognized the retirement of one of its members after nearly 31 years of service to the community.

The department announced that Assistant Chief Ed Sherman completed his final shift on Thursday.

Sherman’s career in Auburn began when he was hired on July 31, 1995. In 2000, he was promoted to lieutenant, then to platoon captain in 2006. He would be promoted to assistant chief in 2012.

In a Facebook post, the department highlighted a defining moment in Sherman’s career. The department said Sherman, at the time a lieutenant, along with three other firefighters and two ambulance personnel, responded to an Easterly Ave structure fire on March 17, 2003. The group played a critical role in rescuing an unconscious occupant from the fire. In recognition of his actions, Sherman received the Fire Department Medal of Valor on October 3 of that year.
The department congratulates Sherman on his retirement and wishes him “many years of health, happiness, and time with family and friends.”
