William Smith first-year Clare Horan (C.W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) was named the Liberty League Women’s Cross Country Rookie of the Week today by the league office. Senior Hope Johnson (Darien/Darien, Conn.) was also recognized, earning a spot on the league’s weekly honor roll.

On Saturday, Horan and Johnson helped the Herons to a second-place team finish in the 6-kilometer SUNY Poly Wildcat Weekend Classic.

Horan finished 13th, crossing the finish line in 26:06.7, just a fraction of a second off her first collegiate 6K time at Rochester last weekend. Horan was one of five Herons in the top 20, leading William Smith to a second-place team finish.

Johnson finished second out of 67 runners. She posted her fastest time of the season at 6K, clocking in at 24:17.2, 6.5 seconds faster than her Rochester time and just 14.3 seconds behind the winner.

William Smith will have a week off before returning to racing Oct. 11 in the Houghton Highlander Invitational.
