Cayuga Community College Men’s Soccer dropped its 2025 season opener Saturday, falling 2-0 on the road to Finger Lakes Community College.

The Spartans entered the season ranked sixth nationally in the preseason polls, but were unable to break through against a strong Lakers defense in the Mid-State Athletic Conference and Region III matchup.

Finger Lakes struck first midway through the opening half with a lofted shot that found the left corner of the net. Cayuga nearly answered before halftime on a header off a corner kick, but the attempt bounced off the crossbar.

The Spartans applied pressure early in the second half but couldn’t capitalize, and the Lakers sealed the win with a late goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation.

Cayuga goalkeeper Matthew Chitty recorded nine saves in the contest. Freshman Matthew Twigg and sophomore captain Joseph Edet registered shots on goal for the Spartans.

Cayuga continues its road trip Wednesday, Sept. 3, with a 7 p.m. kickoff at defending national champion and preseason No. 1 Mohawk Valley Community College.
