Tops Markets has announced it will not reopen its Big Flats grocery store, which was severely damaged by fire earlier this year. The store, located at 830 Consumer Square Plaza in Elmira, was nearing the end of its lease when the decision was made.

Company officials said they’ve been working with business partners and the property owner to help prepare the space for a new tenant, but ultimately decided not to rebuild.

“This decision was not made lightly,” the company said in a statement, noting the store’s long-standing connection to the Big Flats community.

Tops said all employees from the Big Flats location are being offered jobs at nearby stores, including the Elmira store on Cedar Street and the Corning store on West Pulteney Street, ensuring no one loses employment.

The company added that it remains committed to serving the Southern Tier and thanked customers for their loyalty and support over the years.
