The state DEC is inviting residents of all ages and abilities to enjoy a day of outdoor recreation at the annual Get Outdoors & Get Together Day event on Saturday.

The free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the DEC’s Onondaga Lake Visitors Center, located at 270 Restoration Way in Syracuse.

Held in conjunction with National Get Outdoors Day, the event is designed to bring together people of all backgrounds, identities, and abilities while promoting access to New York’s public lands and outdoor recreation opportunities.

DEC Region 7 will offer a variety of hands-on activities and demonstrations throughout the day, including fishing instruction with adaptive equipment available, adaptive trail use opportunities, adaptive birding demonstrations, environmental games and crafts, and educational exhibits featuring wildlife and natural history artifacts.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to try electric motorized wheelchairs provided by SOAR Experiences, Inc. and learn about hiking and camping safety through interactive activities.

The event is being hosted by the DEC and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation in partnership with several state agencies, including the Office of the Chief Disability Officer, the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities, the Department of Veterans’ Services, the Office of Mental Health, and the Justice Center for the Protection of People With Special Needs.

The event will be held rain or shine. Equipment for activities will be provided, though attendees are welcome to bring their own gear. Participants are encouraged to bring water, snacks, and sunscreen.
