September is Responsible Gaming Education Month, and New York State officials are highlighting new efforts to support safe and responsible play.
The Responsible Play Partnership (RPP) — a collaboration between the New York State Gaming Commission, the Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), and the New York Council on Problem Gambling (NYCPG) — is working with licensed gaming operators across the state to expand education, training, and support services.
Commission Chair Brian O’Dwyer said the partnership is ensuring responsible gambling practices remain a priority for all operators. OASAS Commissioner Dr. Chinazo Cunningham pointed to the state’s “Take a Pause” campaign and other resources that connect New Yorkers with help. NYCPG Executive Director Michelle Hadden added that employee education is key to identifying and assisting people struggling with gambling-related harms.
Recent steps include:
- Updated sports wagering regulations requiring operators to collect patron demographic data to better target education and treatment resources.
- A listening session with gaming operators earlier this year to address compliance with advertising regulations, including problem gambling hotline requirements.
- Enhanced training materials for casino and video lottery employees to identify and respond to problem gambling behaviors.
- A new Responsible Gambling Ambassador Training program launching this month for casino management staff.
- A new website template being rolled out to all New York operators, providing a unified message about gambling risks and available support services.
The Gaming Commission will also host a webinar at the end of September to introduce the ambassador training to casino operators.
