As the national average price for a gallon of gas gets closer to the $3 mark, the New York State average is $3.15 on Monday, down one penny from December 2nd. One year ago, the New York State average was $3.49. AAA of Western and Central New York reports the national average price for a gallon of gasoline on Monday is $3.02.

The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline has been less than a dime away from the $3 mark for over a month as the waffling decline has been agonizingly slow. The last time the national average was below $3 was May 11, 2021.

According to the latest data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand and total domestic gasoline stocks both rose slightly while gasoline production declined last week. As the average hovers at $3.02, AAA expects it could fall below $3 a gallon in the next few days.

For drivers who use diesel fuel, the national average price for diesel is $3.51, down three cents from last Monday. The New York average is $3.86, down one cent from last Monday.
