A Franklin County man is facing criminal charges after allegedly stealing a mule in the town of Brasher late on the night of May 1, according to New York State Police.

Troopers say they responded to a reported burglary in progress around 11 p.m. on State Route 37C. Upon investigation, they determined that 50-year-old Mark Darby, of Malone, had unlawfully entered a property and taken the homeowner’s mule.

Darby was later spotted walking along Route 37C with the stolen animal and was taken into custody without incident. He was processed at the State Police barracks in Massena. The mule has since been safely returned to its owner.

Darby is facing charges of third-degree criminal trespass and fourth-degree grand larceny.
