A man was killed Tuesday afternoon after his car struck a garbage truck and caught fire on Interstate 590 in Brighton.

State Police say the crash happened around 2:50 p.m. when a 67-year-old man driving a 1973 Chevrolet Corvette tried to pass a 2016 International Harvester garbage truck in the southbound lanes. The Corvette hit the truck, was pushed to the right, and became lodged in front of it before bursting into flames.

The Corvette’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released.

The truck’s driver, and her passenger, were not injured. Troopers said there were no signs of impairment on the part of the truck driver.

The investigation is ongoing.
