Chemung County is receiving a major boost to its outdoor recreation and tourism economy thanks to a $248,815 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC). The funding will support the construction of the Chemung Canal Connector, a 7-mile trail that will link the Lackawanna Trail to the Catharine Valley Trail.
The new connector will guide pedestrian and bicycle traffic through the Village of Elmira Heights and the City of Elmira, with the goal of increasing tourism and stimulating local economic activity. Once completed, the project will create a continuous 29-mile trail, ultimately tying into the 580-mile Finger Lakes Trail System.
County officials say the trail will enhance recreational access while helping to attract new visitors, support small businesses, raise property values, and strengthen the region’s outdoor economy.
“This investment in the Chemung Canal Connector is a win for our community, our economy, and our quality of life,” said Congressman Nick Langworthy. “By linking key trail systems through Elmira and Elmira Heights, we’re opening the door to thousands of new visitors, stronger small businesses, and a more vibrant outdoor recreation economy. I’m proud to support a project that will benefit Chemung County for generations to come.”
