On Thursday, a Town of Wolcott woman was arrested following an investigation into welfare fraud in the Town of Lyons.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office arrested Brooke Ferris, 24, on charges of Welfare Fraud in the Third Degree, Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, and Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First Degree.

The charges stem from a joint investigation conducted by the Wayne County Department of Social Services and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. It is alleged that Ferris failed to report the income earned by her live-in boyfriend while she was receiving SNAP benefits from the Wayne County Department of Social Services. As a result, Ferris was accused of fraudulently receiving $3,311 in benefits to which she was not entitled.

Ferris was transported to the Wayne County Jail for processing and a Centralized Arraignment Part (CAP) arraignment and was released on an appearance ticket.

The charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Police reports are automatically removed from this site after 90 days.
