A fire at a Western New York golf course caused an estimated $2 million in damage Saturday morning, according to fire investigators.

The Newstead Fire Company was dispatched to Arrowhead Golf Course at 10:38 a.m.in Akron  after reports of a structure fire at The Sterling, the golf course’s event venue.

Fire chiefs arriving at the scene reported heavy smoke and active flames coming from the building’s northwest corner. Members of the public were evacuating the structure as emergency crews arrived.

No injuries were reported.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office Fire Investigation Unit later determined the fire was caused by the improper disposal of a cigarette.

Investigators estimated the fire caused approximately $1.5 million in damage to the structure and another $500,000 in damage to its contents.
