The New York State Police launched a DWI crackdown for Memorial Day weekend to enhance road safety.

New York State Police and local law enforcement agencies will increase patrols statewide this Memorial Day weekend as part of a crackdown on impaired and reckless driving.

The special enforcement campaign started Friday and runs through Monday. Officials say the extra patrols are funded through grants from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

Drivers can expect to see sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols throughout the holiday weekend, which is one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Troopers will also use both marked patrol vehicles and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement, or CITE, vehicles designed to blend in with regular traffic to better identify violations before activating emergency lights.

During last year’s Memorial Day enforcement campaign, State Police arrested 245 drivers for impaired driving, issued more than 12,000 tickets, and investigated 774 crashes statewide, including three fatal crashes.

Officials are also reminding motorists about the state’s “Have a Plan” mobile app, which helps users find taxi services, designate drivers, review DWI laws and penalties, and report suspected impaired drivers.
