The Seneca Falls Police Department is bringing back its Helmet Safety Citation program this summer to encourage children to wear helmets while riding bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and other wheeled devices.
The program runs from June 28 through September 5. During that time, officers will be looking for young riders who are practicing safe habits and wearing helmets. Children spotted doing so may receive a Helmet Safety Citation, which can be redeemed for a small prize donated by local business sponsors.
Police say the initiative is designed to promote helmet use and reinforce safe riding habits among children.
According to the department, New York State law requires children under the age of 14 to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle or using similar wheeled devices. Officials also noted that helmets can reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury by as much as 88 percent and are especially important as e-bikes and scooters become increasingly popular.
The department is encouraging parents to ensure helmets fit properly and are worn every time children ride.
Seneca Falls Police are also seeking additional business sponsors to support the program. Businesses interested in participating are encouraged to contact the department for more information.
Police say the program not only promotes safety but also helps foster positive interactions between officers and young people in the community.
