The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office honored Sheriff Timothy Thompson Jr. on Friday with a retirement ceremony and walkout attended by family members, friends, colleagues, and community supporters.
Thompson is retiring after more than 27 years of service with the Sheriff’s Office, a career that saw him rise through the ranks from dispatcher to deputy sheriff, sergeant, investigator, lieutenant, and ultimately sheriff.
In announcing his retirement last month, Thompson reflected on several accomplishments achieved during his tenure leading the agency. Among them were maintaining accreditation standards across all divisions of the Sheriff’s Office, successfully negotiating collective bargaining agreements with both employee unions, and implementing the Blue Line Wellness program to provide mental health support for law enforcement personnel.
Thompson also highlighted efforts to strengthen community engagement through public safety meetings, recruitment events, school partnerships, and fraud prevention programs aimed at senior citizens.
Within the county jail, Thompson noted that the Sheriff’s Office was able to achieve full staffing levels despite recruitment challenges facing law enforcement agencies across New York. The office also launched a program to house female incarcerated individuals, creating an additional source of revenue for Seneca County.
The Sheriff’s Office praised Thompson for his dedication, leadership, and commitment to serving the residents of Seneca County, noting that his contributions have left a lasting impact on the agency and those who worked alongside him throughout his career.
