The Fishers Fire District officially dissolved Wednesday morning, leaving 26 full-time firefighters out of work and shifting fire protection responsibilities to surrounding departments.

Coverage for the district’s 26 square miles will now be handled by the Town of Victor, with Ontario County 911 dispatching the closest available crews, which could include Victor, Bushnell’s Basin, or Henrietta fire departments.

The decision to shut down the district was finalized on August 18th during a special meeting at Victor High School. While officials said the district is currently financially stable, the Board of Fire Commissioners pointed to rising benefit costs and projections that the tax levy could triple within the next decade as the driving factors behind the move.
