As Memorial Day weekend approaches, New York officials are reminding residents to take precautions while enjoying outdoor activities during the summer season.
The New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection released a series of summer safety tips covering everything from heat safety and grilling to water activities and fireworks.
Secretary of State Walter Mosley said Memorial Day marks the beginning of a busy season for outdoor gatherings and recreation and encouraged New Yorkers to follow simple safety measures to avoid accidents and injuries. State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald also urged residents to stay safe while enjoying warm weather activities.
Officials are reminding residents never to leave children or pets in hot vehicles, noting heat stroke can happen even when outside temperatures are relatively mild. New Yorkers are also encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, and monitor weather conditions for heat advisories.
The state also emphasized water safety, urging adults to supervise children near pools, lakes, and beaches. Consumers are encouraged to follow safety rules at amusement parks and fairs and inspect playground equipment for damage before children use it.
Outdoor grilling and fireworks safety were also highlighted. Officials say grills should only be used outdoors and away from homes or flammable surfaces. The state also warned that sparklers can cause serious burns and encouraged families to leave fireworks displays to professionals.
Additional reminders included wearing helmets while biking or skateboarding, using sunscreen, protecting against tick and mosquito bites, and following proper safety procedures when operating lawn equipment or power tools.
