New York is set to receive more than $40 million in federal funding to help communities test for and remove PFAS contamination from drinking water systems, according to U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

According to Gillibrand’s office, the $40,525,000 will support water testing and infrastructure projects aimed at combating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS, along with other emerging contaminants.

PFAS chemicals have been widely used in industrial manufacturing, firefighting foam, and consumer products. Health officials say exposure to PFAS has been linked to cancer, thyroid problems, reproductive issues, birth defects, and reduced immune function.

Gillibrand, who serves on the Senate Appropriations Interior and Environment Subcommittee, said the funding will help communities improve water safety and modernize infrastructure.

The funding comes through the Emerging Contaminants in Small or Disadvantaged Communities grant program, which was created under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law signed in 2021 by former President Joe Biden. The national program includes a $5 billion investment over five years to help communities address PFAS and other contaminants in drinking water systems.

Gillibrand’s office cited data from the Environmental Working Group estimating that more than 1.3 million New Yorkers have concerning levels of PFAS in their drinking water.

The senator also criticized recent actions by the Trump administration related to PFAS regulations, saying federal programs designed to combat contamination have been weakened. Earlier this week, the Environmental Protection Agency proposed repealing certain limits on PFAS and other contaminants in drinking water, according to Gillibrand’s office.
