Four people have been arrested in connection with an ongoing child endangerment investigation at the SUNY Cortland Child Care Center.
According to SUNY Cortland University Police, 57-year-old Heather Hurteau, of Cortland, was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Police said Hurteau, who worked at the childcare center, was processed and released with an appearance ticket for Cortland City Court on June 1st. Previously arrested were 50-year-old Aimee Wyatt, of Truxton, was arrested April 24, while 50-year-old Karen Diescher and 29-year-old Kelsi Carlisle, both of Cortland, were arrested May 7. All face child endangerment charges.
The investigation also prompted action from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. State officials identified several violations at the daycare center, including corporal punishment, and recommended revocation of the facility’s license.
As of Thursday, the SUNY Cortland Child Care Center was listed as pending revocation. The center closed for two weeks beginning May 18 to maintain staffing ratios required under state guidelines.
Officials said the daycare center operates independently as a private, nonprofit organization located on the SUNY Cortland campus.
