Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive, a historic marvel, makes a stop in Steuben County, drawing a crowd of onlookers.

The world’s largest steam locomotive will pass through Steuben County on Thursday as it goes from coast to coast for America’s 250th Anniversary!

Union Pacific’s historic Big Boy No. 4014 is expected to enter Steuben County from Allegany County before making a scheduled whistle stop in Hornell from approximately 2 to 2:30 p.m. After departing Hornell, the locomotive will continue east through the Canisteo River Valley toward Corning before entering Chemung County.

County officials expect thousands of rail enthusiasts, residents, and visitors to gather along the route to catch a glimpse of the historic locomotive. Significant traffic congestion is anticipated, particularly in and around Hornell between noon and 4 p.m.

To ensure a safe event, officials are reminding spectators to stay off railroad tracks, bridges, trestles, and railroad rights-of-way. Visitors are also encouraged to remain at least 25 feet from the tracks, view the train only from approved public locations, obey directions from law enforcement and emergency personnel, and avoid trespassing on railroad or private property.

Officials are also warning against flying drones near the locomotive or rail corridor and urge motorists not to race or attempt to chase the train along local roadways.

In addition to crowd and traffic concerns, county officials are advising spectators to prepare for warm and humid weather conditions expected throughout the day. Visitors are encouraged to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, use sunscreen, and seek shade when possible.

Officials also recommend closely monitoring children, older adults, and pets for signs of heat-related illness. If thunderstorms develop, spectators should seek shelter in a sturdy building or vehicle rather than under trees.

Motorists should plan for delays near popular viewing areas and allow extra travel time. Spectators are encouraged to arrive early, park legally, and remain patient as large crowds are expected throughout the afternoon.

Big Boy No. 4014, a restored steam locomotive operated by Union Pacific, is one of the most famous locomotives in the world and routinely draws large crowds during its public appearances. Built in 1941, the train measures 132 feet long and weighs 1.2 million pounds.
