The Canandaigua City School District is now accepting nominations for its highest staff honor, the John Wilcox Award.

The award is presented annually at commencement to a district staff member whose professional values reflect those of longtime Canandaigua Academy Principal John Wilcox, who served from 1967 to 1986. Wilcox was known for his commitment to putting students first, supporting their success through strong relationships with staff and families, and maintaining high standards of discipline, structure, and hard work.

District officials say the award recognizes individuals who demonstrate dedication to student achievement, character education, and the broader Canandaigua community—principles that defined Wilcox’s leadership. He passed away on December 3, 2008.

Previous recipients of the John Wilcox Award include Rick Gollaher, Brian Dermody, Arlene DeVinney, Deborah Wilbur, John Michalko, Trish Kelley, John LaFave, Annette Annesi, Greg Kane, Amy Principato, Brian Amesbury, Mandy Dedrick-Gerstner, Josh Mull, Mary Ann Pavone, Kelly Smith, and Karen Brown.

Nominations are open to any member of the community. Submissions should include a written explanation of how the nominee exemplifies the qualities associated with Wilcox’s legacy.

Nominations must be submitted by Thursday, May 21, 2026, to Matt Schrage, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, at 143 North Pearl Street, Canandaigua, 14424. Nominations can also be emailed to [email protected], which officials say is the preferred method.
