State Police have confirmed that an 18-year-old who had been the subject of an extensive search effort in Tioga County was found dead Monday in the Susquehanna River.
According to State Police, Dalton Malmstrom was located on Monday by the New York State Police Under Water Recovery Team and members of the K9 unit. Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Nichols Fire Department.
Malmstrom had been missing since Saturday morning, when investigators said he left his residence in the 2100 block of East River Road in the Town of Nichols, near the Susquehanna River, at approximately 7:45 a.m. Family members told authorities he had not been acting like himself before leaving the home.
The search drew a large response from emergency personnel and volunteers from both New York and Pennsylvania over the weekend.
State Police thanked numerous agencies for assisting in the search and recovery operation, including the Nichols Fire Department and its rescue boat crew, Tioga Center Fire Department, Athens Township Fire Department, Sayre Fire Department, Athens Borough Fire Department, Bradford County Office of Emergency Services, Tioga County Office of Emergency Services, Owego Fire Department, Greater Valley Rescue and EMS, Litchfield Fire Department, the Bradford County Drone Team, Tioga County Sheriff’s Department, and multiple volunteers from both states.
