State Police are investigating after a deceased individual was found near a canal lock in Oneida County over the weekend.

Troopers were called to the area of Lock 22 on Wood Creek Road in the Town of Verona at approximately 2 p.m. Sunday after a caller reported finding a body.

Members of the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Investigators believe the deceased may be connected to a missing person case reported to the Rome Police Department on May 24. However, authorities said identification has not yet been confirmed and is pending examination by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office.

At this time, investigators believe the incident is isolated and say there is no known threat to the public.

The investigation is being conducted jointly by the New York State Police and Rome Police Department, with assistance from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Utica Police Department, and the New York State Canal Corporation.
